Wisdom Teeth

03-08-01-2For some lucky people, wisdom teeth don’t present a problem, either because they have sufficient room in their mouth to accommodate the extra teeth or because they never develop them at all. Unfortunately for others, wisdom teeth can cause a host of problems, becoming impacted or wedged and causing discomfort and pain that can only be treated with wisdom teeth surgery.

Wisdom teeth usually develop during an individual’s late teens to mid twenties. If they become impacted, infection and inflammation can ensue, resulting in pain, swollen gums, jaw stiffness and other symptoms. While antibiotics can be prescribed to fight any infection that may occur, finding a dentist to perform affordable wisdom teeth removal is the best course of action to take.

03-08-01-3Wisdom teeth surgery is a fairly major undertaking and the recovery period is significantly longer than many other dental procedures. When performing a wisdom teeth extraction, a dental surgeon will:

  • Make an incision in the gum tissue in order to expose the wisdom tooth and bone
  • Remove the bone blocking access to the tooth root
  • Divide the tooth into sections (if it looks like it will be easier to remove in pieces)
  • Remove the wisdom tooth
  • Thoroughly clean the site of the removed tooth, ensuring all debris from the tooth and bone are removed
  • Close the wound with stitches to promote healing after the wisdom teeth surgery
  • Places gauze over the extraction site to control bleeding and help a blood clot form

After the procedure, your dentist will advise you on how to manage post surgery pain, bleeding, swelling and bruising.
